Hello Kalama School District Families -
On February 10, 2026, the Kalama School District anticipates placing a renewal EP&O levy measure on the ballot for voters to consider. In accordance with RCW 29A.32.280, the district is seeking parents and community members interested in participating on a committee of up to three (3) district residents either in argument for or argument against the district’s upcoming EP&O levy measure.
Each for/against statement may be up to 250 words for the main statement. Rebuttals from each side may be up to 75 words and these statements appear in the Local Voters’ Pamphlet published by the county elections office. Contact information for the committees may be listed in the Local Voters’ Pamphlet. For more information regarding content requirements and the procedures for submitting the for/against committee statements and rebuttals, please reference the Cowlitz County “Jurisdiction Manual” available at: www.co.cowlitz.wa.us/2515/Precincts-and-Districts.
It is important to have both “for” and “against” committees for the EP&O levy on a ballot because:
Balanced information for voters – Washington State election laws are designed to give voters fair and balanced information. Official voter pamphlets include statements from both sides so voters can understand the benefits and potential drawbacks before casting their vote.
Transparency and trust – When both perspectives are represented, it shows the district and election process are open and transparent, not one-sided or biased toward or against the levy. This builds trust within the community.
Community engagement – Having both sides encourages healthy civic engagement. People are more likely to participate and feel heard when multiple viewpoints are acknowledged and discussed respectfully.
Informed decision-making – Voters can make well-informed choices when they hear the reasoning and evidence presented by both supporters and opponents.
Having “for” and “against” committees ensures fairness, accountability, and democratic integrity in the election process. Your involvement helps ensure our community has a full range of perspectives represented in the conversation about this upcoming levy measure.
If you’d like to learn more or express your interest in serving on either the “for” or the “against” committee, please contact Steve Padilla, Chief of Staff, at steve.padilla@kalama.k12.wa.us or 360.673.5282. The deadline to apply is Friday, November 7.
